A directory is a large categorised list of web sites and pages. The two most famous examples are Yahoo and the Open Directory Project

There is nothing wrong with Directories and they provide a valuable service. If you are not already I suggest you get a listing in the above two.

Yahoo will charge you for the privilege.

The ODP is free but can be slow to get listed as it is run by volunteers
